Are our street name sexist?

I am sharing this news article on the BBC, as it is very relevant to my own practice!

A recent exploration in the body of work for my MA show and a continued fascination was of gendered space, examining a space that is masculine or feminine and if so how that space then alters our emotion when we are in it. This idea grew from the production of a map of a city, both a real city (the map was of the male and female named streets in central London) and a city located in the geography of the imagination, a city that represents something other but still holds a resemblance to reality.

Houxo Que- Live Painting Performance- Sat, 7th April, 2012

I went to see a group exhibition in Jiyugaoka, Tokyo last night. One of the exciting Artists Houxo Que, who has worked with a number of high profile companies including Topshop and Apple internationally did a live performace piece. As you can see from the photographs he creates a luminous installation, combining florescent paints and UV lighting on canvas. This performance was created to live music, responding to the rhythm and emotion as he swirled the paint across the canvas and performed various mark making.

Houxo Que was asked by TopShop in collaboration with Justokyo to produce Live Painting window displays for a large number of their flagship stores: including New York and many stores in the UK, see http://justokyo.jp/archive/topshop/

In May, 2010 Houxo Que worked with Apple to create the Granimator™ , a free wallpaper creator available at iTunes, see him creating it here http://youtu.be/PYJaaQSqH-8

Lastly a short video of Hockney at work on the ipad, it is a process I will be experimenting with in my new work!

I recently went to the Hockney show at the RA, I have always been interested in his work particularly the photographic collages such as Pearblossom Highway, which is featured in the show and was intrigued to see his recent body of work which takes us back to his birthplace of Yorkshire. This show celebrates the artists depiction of landscape and most of the works were oil paintings, charcoal and ipad drawings between 2004-2011.

I enjoyed the show, this recent work does not have the same qualities of previous works that are closer to my own practice and interest but what was so inspiring to me is how Hockney throughout his career has embraced new technology, his thirst to continually work with a new process and try and perfect it , a constant self renewal. The number of works on show is a little overwhelming but what was fascinating to me was seeing the process behind them, the use of multiples, working with the ipad and video, this gave a real insight into Hockney’s practice and passion.
